On-Site Diagnostic & Measure
A Moffat technician confirms the failure mode, checks the frame for rot or warping, and documents thickness, coating, tempering, and safety-glazing spec for the order.
Four conditions drive most window glass replacement work in Northern Colorado homes and buildings. A broken or cracked pane compromises safety, security, and weather sealing all at once, and it is the most common reason a buyer lands on this page. Failed thermal performance is the second driver: a single failed pane in a multi-pane assembly drops the whole window's insulation value, and if the failure is on the sealed-unit side, our insulated glass unit page covers that path.
A single-pane-to-double-pane upgrade is the third path, common in older Northern Colorado homes where the original glazing predates modern thermal expectations and the frame can accept the thicker assembly. The fourth driver is safety-glazing compliance during a retrofit at code-defined locations like door sidelites, glass near the floor, near stairs, or near tubs and showers. On all four paths, Moffat replaces the glass within the existing frame; full window-and-frame replacement is a separate conversation. Residential and low-rise commercial scope.

Moffat replaces five window glass types, each ordered to the diagnosed spec.
Typical residential lite thickness runs 3/32 inch to 1/4 inch, confirmed at the diagnostic.
Glass thickness for a residential window lite typically runs 3/32 inch to 1/4 inch, with thicker glass specified for oversized panels, door lites, and low-rise commercial applications. Thickness is confirmed at the on-site visit, not estimated from a photo.
Low-E coating selection tunes thermal performance to the elevation; surface placement matters, and the coating is optional on most replacements but required for energy-rated remodels. The tempering-versus-laminating decision at safety-glazing locations comes down to use case: tempering is the residential default, and laminating is chosen where sound dampening, UV blocking, or post-break shard retention drive the spec. Frosted, textured, and tinted options cover privacy at bathrooms and entry sidelites, and solar heat gain control on south- and west-facing elevations. Frame compatibility (aluminum, wood sash, vinyl, fiberglass) is verified at the diagnostic; a compromised or rotted frame becomes a separate conversation about full window replacement.

On the residential side, the most common scopes are broken or cracked pane replacement in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and sunrooms; single-pane-to-double-pane upgrade retrofits where the frame can accept the increased thickness; door sidelites and entry-door glass at code-required safety-glazing locations; frosted bathroom windows; tinted south- and west-facing elevations; and skylights within reach. Many of these openings carry frames from the major residential window manufacturers (AMSCO, JELD-WEN, Milgard, Gerkin); Moffat coordinates the retrofit glass spec to the existing frame system.
On the commercial side, we replace window glass in low-rise buildings up to four stories: storefronts, office windows, hospitality and restaurant interiors, and mixed-use buildings. We don't pitch high-rise or curtain wall above four stories.
A Moffat technician confirms the failure mode, checks the frame for rot or warping, and documents thickness, coating, tempering, and safety-glazing spec for the order.
Replacement glass is factory-cut and tempered or laminated to the diagnosed spec. Lead time runs 5 to 10 business days from approved measurement, for every installer, because the factory is the bottleneck. A century of Northern Colorado glass work means we know what to inspect on receipt: edge integrity, coating orientation, dimensional accuracy, tempering certification.
Moffat technicians install, never subcontracted. Frame prep, glaze or gasket reset, weather window confirmed for exterior installs.
We verify the perimeter seal, brief you on the glaze cure period, and register the warranty, and if anything needs adjusting in the first year, the same Moffat team that built it comes back to make it right.
Since 1921, Moffat has cut, fabricated, and installed custom glass for Northern Colorado, and a century of work in Larimer and Weld County means we have seen every kind of broken pane, frame condition, and glass spec these properties carry. The technician who diagnoses your window is from the same in-house team that installs the replacement; Moffat technicians, never subcontracted. Three locations across the region: Evans HQ, Loveland, Fort Collins.
We're upfront about lead times because factory-cut glass is the same 5 to 10 business days for everyone; what we control is diagnostic accuracy and install quality. The membership stack supports that posture: BBB Northern Colorado A+ accredited, NGA member, plus the Shower Door Professionals Co-op and our Greeley and Evans Chamber memberships. Commercial scope is capped at four stories.
Yes, in most cases the glass can be replaced within the existing frame as long as the frame is structurally sound. The diagnostic checks frame condition (rot, warping, broken seals, corroded hardware), material compatibility with the new glass spec (single-pane to double-pane upgrades require enough frame depth for the thicker assembly), and operational hardware function (sash balances, locks, weatherstripping). If the frame is compromised or undersized, full window replacement becomes the right call instead. Moffat confirms which scope fits at the on-site diagnostic. Schedule a diagnostic visit.
Replacement window glass is factory-cut to spec, so lead time runs 5 to 10 business days from approved measurement, for every installer. Moffat doesn't custom-temper window panes in-house; we diagnose, order to spec (thickness, coating, tempering, tint, safety glazing), inspect at receipt, then schedule the install. Larger or commercial orders may run slightly longer. Schedule a diagnostic visit to start your order.
Annealed is standard float glass; tempered is heat-treated for about four times the strength and a dull-edged break pattern; laminated bonds two glass layers around a polyvinyl butyral interlayer that holds shards in place. Tempered and laminated both meet code at safety-glazing locations. Laminated adds sound dampening, UV blocking, and post-break shard retention. We spec the right glass type at the on-site visit.
Window glass replacement is diagnostic-priced because cost varies by glass size, type, coating, tempering or laminating, frame condition, and access. A small bedroom annealed-pane swap is a different scope from an oversized tempered sidelite with a Low-E coating. We confirm the spec at the on-site diagnostic, then quote against the factory-cut glass order plus install labor. Request a quote for a precise estimate.
Often yes, if the existing frame can accommodate the increased thickness of a sealed double-pane unit. The diagnostic confirms frame depth, weight tolerance, and hardware compatibility. If the frame is undersized or compromised, full window replacement is the better path. Properly upgraded, the room gains thermal performance and reduced condensation. See our IGU page or schedule a diagnostic to confirm.

I do not hesitate to recommend Moffat Glass
"We needed our patio screen door replaced. Moffat answered the phone (something that 3 other businesses did not do), scheduled someone to come measure the same day, manufactured our non-standard sized door and installed it within a week. We have yet to hear from the other businesses we contacted who told us they would 'get right back' to us. The quality of customer service was very good. Everyone was friendly, professional, and expressed appreciation for our business. I do not hesitate to recommend Moffat Glass. They have been in Greeley for a long time and I can see why they have lasted."
