Screen Replacement and Repair in Northern Colorado

A torn, hail-damaged, sun-degraded, or pet-shredded screen has a fix, and the fix starts with a diagnostic visit, not a guess from a phone call. Moffat Glass has been working with custom glass and screens across Northern Colorado since 1921, and over a century of seeing every kind of torn mesh and bent frame in Larimer and Weld County homes and buildings is what makes our on-site visit different. We confirm what failed, check whether the existing frame is sound, and recommend the right mesh for your goals, whether that's a like-for-like fiberglass re-screen or an upgrade to pet-resistant, solar, or fine no-see-um mesh. Residential and low-rise commercial scope.

When Screens Need Replacing or Repair

Four scenarios drive most screen replacement work in Northern Colorado homes. Torn or damaged mesh is the lead: hail damage during Front Range storm season (May through September), pet claws and teeth, and age-related tearing. Sun-degraded mesh is the second driver: Northern Colorado sun on south- and west-facing elevations breaks down standard fiberglass within roughly 5 to 10 years.

Pet damage is the third path and the most common trigger for the pet-resistant upgrade conversation. The fourth is a planned mesh upgrade, where the existing screens still function but the homeowner wants pet-resistant polyester, solar mesh, or fine no-see-um mesh for foothills bug pressure. Moffat re-screens the existing aluminum or wood frame when it's structurally sound, and fabricates a new frame from commodity stock when it isn't. We don't install retractable or phantom screens; if that's the system you're after, we'll point you toward a specialist. See our window glass replacement page for buyers thinking about a screen plus glass package.

Screen Mesh Types We Install

Moffat installs five screen mesh types, each ordered to the diagnosed opening and goal.

  • Standard Fiberglass Mesh. Vinyl-coated fiberglass strands in an 18×16 strands-per-inch grid. The default on most existing residential screens: cost-effective and easy to re-screen, but degrades under Northern Colorado sun on south- and west-facing elevations within roughly 5 to 10 years.
  • Aluminum Mesh. Woven aluminum wire, plain or charcoal finish (charcoal reduces glare and improves outward visibility). Holds up longer than fiberglass against sun and weather, though it can crease if struck.
  • Pet-Resistant Polyester Mesh. Heavy-duty polyester roughly seven times stronger than standard fiberglass, engineered to resist claws, teeth, and impact from pets. Recommended for ground-floor screens and patio doors. Pet-resistant, not pet-proof: no screen is fully pet-proof.
  • Solar / Sun-Shade Mesh. A dense weave that blocks 70 to 90 percent of solar heat gain while preserving outward view and airflow. Designers often spec it on south- and west-facing windows for glare control during Front Range summers.
  • No-See-Um / Fine Mesh. Extra-fine weave (typically 20×20 strands per inch or finer) that blocks gnats and small biting insects standard mesh lets through. Common on foothills properties, properties near water, and patio doors.

Frames, Spline, and Hardware Specs

Frame material is selected at the diagnostic. Aluminum is the standard for residential and low-rise commercial work (durable, lightweight, available in white, beige, bronze, and mill finishes); wood fits heritage and custom-trim homes where aluminum reads wrong against the architecture. Frame color is coordinated with window trim per spec, with designers often choosing bronze or dark frames on contemporary builds and mill finish on traditional homes.

Standard residential mesh runs an 18×16 grid; no-see-um runs 20×20 or denser; coarser grids are available where airflow matters more than insect-blocking. Spline (the rubber gasket that locks mesh into the frame channel) is sized to the frame profile and mesh thickness so tension distributes evenly. Corner connectors, pull tabs, spring-plunger latches, and lift handles follow the original frame system or your accessibility preference. Some window manufacturers specify proprietary attachment hardware on certain window lines; we verify compatibility at the on-site visit before ordering frame stock.

Where We Replace and Repair Screens

On the residential side, the most common scopes are torn window screens across bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and sunrooms; sliding patio and French door screens, where pet-resistant mesh is often the right call; foothills properties and homes near water that need fine no-see-um mesh; south- and west-facing elevations where solar mesh reduces heat and glare; new-build homeowners upgrading from builder-grade fiberglass; and hail-damaged screens after Front Range storm season (May through September).

On the commercial side, we replace and re-screen window openings in low-rise buildings up to four stories: office windows, hospitality and restaurant interiors, and mixed-use buildings with operable windows. We don't pitch high-rise or curtain wall above four stories.

Our Screen Replacement and Repair Process

1

On-Site Diagnostic & Measure

A Moffat technician confirms the damage condition (torn mesh, bent frame, broken spline, missing corner connector, damaged pull tab), checks the frame's structural integrity, measures the opening, and confirms your mesh-upgrade goals.

2

In-Shop Screen Fabrication or Re-Screening

Existing frames are re-screened in our shop with new mesh, spline, corner connectors, and pull tabs as needed. New frames are fabricated from commodity aluminum or wood stock cut to the diagnosed dimensions. Typical lead time runs 3 to 7 business days from approved measurement. A century of Northern Colorado work means we know how to fit a screen so it tensions evenly and sits flush in the track.

3

Schedule & Install

Moffat technicians install, never subcontracted. We re-attach each screen, verify operational hardware (latches, pull tabs, spring plungers), and check the perimeter so daylight gaps don't admit insects.

4

Final Walkthrough

We verify mesh tension, perimeter fit, and operational hardware at every replaced screen, register the warranty, and if anything needs adjusting in the first year, the same Moffat team that built it comes back to make it right.

Why Northern Colorado Chooses Moffat for Screens

Since 1921, Moffat has cut, fabricated, and installed custom glass and screens for Northern Colorado, and a century of work in Larimer and Weld County means we've seen every kind of torn mesh, bent frame, and Front Range exposure pattern these properties carry. The technician who diagnoses your screen is from the same in-house team that re-screens or fabricates the frame and installs the finished unit; Moffat technicians, never subcontracted. Three locations: Evans HQ, Loveland, Fort Collins.

The membership stack backs the posture: BBB Northern Colorado A+ accredited, NGA member, plus the Shower Door Professionals Co-op and our Greeley and Evans Chamber memberships. We carry every mesh type a Northern Colorado home asks for, and we'll tell you which one your application actually needs instead of upselling the heaviest spec by default. Commercial scope is capped at four stories.

Schedule a Screen Diagnostic

Torn mesh has a fix, and a mesh upgrade has a recommendation. It starts with knowing what your opening and your goals actually call for. Schedule an on-site diagnostic and we'll confirm what failed, whether the existing frame can be re-screened, and which mesh fits your sun exposure, pet situation, and bug pressure.

Screen Replacement and Repair FAQs

What's the difference between fiberglass, aluminum, pet-resistant, solar, and no-see-um screen mesh?+

Each mesh is engineered for a different use case: fiberglass is the standard, aluminum lasts longer, pet-resistant takes claws, solar blocks heat, no-see-um stops gnats. Standard fiberglass degrades under Northern Colorado sun in 5 to 10 years. Aluminum holds up longer and resists denting. Pet-resistant polyester is roughly seven times stronger than fiberglass (resistant, not pet-proof). Solar mesh blocks 70 to 90 percent of solar heat gain. No-see-um mesh (20×20 strands per inch or finer) stops gnats and small biting insects. Schedule a diagnostic visit.

Can you re-screen an existing window or patio door screen frame?+

Yes, in most cases the existing frame can be re-screened as long as the aluminum or wood frame is structurally sound. We replace the mesh and the spline, and swap corner connectors or pull tabs as needed. If the frame is bent, corroded, or rotted, fabricating a new frame from commodity stock is the right call instead. Schedule a diagnostic visit.

Are pet-resistant screens actually pet-proof?+

Pet-resistant screens are resistant, not pet-proof. Heavy-duty polyester mesh is roughly seven times stronger than standard fiberglass and holds up far better against claws, teeth, and repeated impact, especially on ground-floor windows and patio doors. A determined dog can still damage any screen, so we position pet-resistant as a major upgrade rather than a guarantee. Get a quote.

How much does screen replacement cost in Northern Colorado?+

Screen replacement is diagnostic-priced because cost varies by mesh type, frame size, re-screen versus new-frame fabrication, accessibility, and quantity. A standard fiberglass re-screen on a bedroom window is a different scope from solar mesh fabricated into new aluminum frames across a sun-exposed elevation. Request a quote for a precise estimate.

Do solar / sun-shade screens really reduce indoor heat?+

Yes, solar mesh typically blocks 70 to 90 percent of solar heat gain on the windows it covers. The dense weave intercepts solar radiation at the screen before it reaches the glass, reducing cooling load during Front Range summer months. Most effective on south- and west-facing elevations. Schedule a diagnostic to spec solar mesh for sun-exposed elevations.
