Most custom heavy-glass projects spec at 3/8" tempered (often laminated for exterior or commercial) or 1/2" tempered, depending on panel size, span, and application. Edge finishes (polished, beveled, or seamed) and hinge holes, handle cutouts, and corner notches are completed in-shop on the same panel that enters the kiln, because no edge or hole work can be done after tempering.
The tempering process itself is precise. Each panel is heated to roughly 600 to 700°C, then rapidly quenched with high-pressure air jets, which makes the glass 4 to 5 times stronger than annealed and produces the small-pebble break pattern required by ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Cat. II on showers, doors, partitions, and overhead glazing. Glass options at the on-site measure include clear, low-iron, frosted, textured, and back-painted.
