Frameless vs Framed Shower Doors: Which Is Best For Your Northern Colorado Bathroom Remodel?

Northern Colorado homeowners planning a bathroom remodel keep landing on the same shower-door question: frameless, semi-frameless, or framed? The right answer depends on the opening, the design direction, the remodel scope, and how long the door has to last. A frameless shower door uses no perimeter framing, a semi-frameless door uses a slim framed channel at the jamb (and often the floor track), and a framed door uses full aluminum framing around the perimeter: three categories with different durability, design, and cost profiles. Moffat fabricates custom frameless and semi-frameless enclosures in our Northern Colorado shop and installs framed kits from any source. Since 1921, our team has built shower enclosures across Larimer and Weld County. This article walks each style honestly so you can match it to the bathroom you are remodeling.

What Each Shower Door Style Actually Is

Each style has its own framing characteristic, glass thickness range, and relationship to custom fabrication.

Frameless Shower Doors

A frameless shower door is custom-fabricated heavy glass, typically 3/8" or 1/2" thick, held by clamps, hinges, and at most a top header. No perimeter aluminum framing around the door or panels. Moffat fabricates frameless enclosures custom to each opening in our Northern Colorado shop, templated to out-of-plumb walls, sloping floors, and the corner geometry of the room. (See: Custom Frameless Shower Doors.)

Semi-Frameless Shower Doors

A semi-frameless shower door uses the same custom 3/8" or 1/2" heavy glass as a fully frameless build, paired with a slim framed channel at the jamb and often the floor track. The door panel itself remains unframed glass. This is a deliberate design and structural choice, not a budget step-down: same glass, same hardware grade, with intentional framing where the design calls for it. (See: Semi-Frameless Shower Doors.)

Framed Shower Doors

A framed shower door is a manufacturer-spec'd kit with full aluminum framing around the door and panels, typically built with thinner glass (1/4" tempered) and sold through retail channels: home centers, online retailers, designer-spec catalogs, manufacturer-direct. Framed kits are a legitimate kit-tier retail option, and Moffat installs them from any source with custom-fit modifications. We do not fabricate framed kits in-shop. (See: Shower Door Kit Installation.)

Frameless Shower Doors: Pros, Cons, Best Fit

Frameless is the category most often paired with luxury bathroom remodels in Northern Colorado, and it is where Moffat's custom-fabrication scope lands hardest.

Aesthetics. Clean lines, unobstructed glass, no aluminum perimeter to read against tile or stone. Frameless opens the bathroom visually and pairs naturally with design-forward fixture and finish selections.

Durability and glass spec. Custom frameless uses 3/8" or 1/2" tempered safety glass meeting ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Cat. II: heavier and stronger than the 1/4" glass typical in framed kits, with the same tempered-safety break pattern (small pebbles, not sharp shards).

Fit and customization. Every Moffat frameless enclosure is custom-fabricated to the real opening: out-of-plumb walls, non-square corners, tile transitions, and unusual jamb conditions are templated, not approximated. No nominal sizing.

Lead time. Because Moffat handles in-house fabrication and tempering, most custom frameless enclosures install in 1–2 weeks from approved measurement, versus 2–3 weeks for installers who outsource. A real week off the remodel timeline.

Honest fit notes. Frameless costs more upfront than a kit-tier framed door. Some openings genuinely benefit from semi-frameless structural support rather than a fully frameless build. Best fit: premium remodels, design-forward bathrooms, custom openings, and buyers who want the clean glass-only aesthetic. Moffat-fabricated work carries a 1-year residential workmanship warranty on labor.

Semi-Frameless: The Intentional Middle Ground

Semi-frameless is not the budget tier between framed and frameless. It is the deliberate design and structural choice for openings where a slim framed channel is the right answer, fabricated to the same spec as a fully frameless build.

Aesthetics. A clean glass door panel with a slim framed channel at the jamb, coordinated to the hardware finish so the frame line reads as one design decision, not two. Intentional and visible by design.

Durability and glass spec. Semi-frameless uses the same 3/8" or 1/2" tempered glass as the frameless category, with the same code compliance (ANSI Z97.1, CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Cat. II). The framing is structural and aesthetic, not a glass-grade compromise.

Fit and customization. Every Moffat semi-frameless enclosure is custom-fabricated in our shop to the actual opening. The framed channel anchors to the wall jamb, useful when the jamb needs added structural backing: long door panels, certain corner geometries, jambs that will not hold clamp loads alone.

When semi-frameless is the right answer. Long panels without adequate jamb backing, corner geometries that benefit from framed attachment, or buyers who want the slim frame line as part of the design. Bathrooms where full frameless is not structurally advisable for the opening land here naturally.

Best fit: premium remodels where the opening or design direction calls for a slim frame line. Same custom-fabrication tier as frameless: same glass, same hardware, same in-house team.

Framed Shower Doors: Kit-Tier Retail Option

Framed shower doors are a legitimate kit-tier retail option, and Moffat installs framed kits from any source with custom-fit modifications. We do not fabricate framed kits in-shop. This section treats framed honestly, not as a lesser choice for the bathrooms where framed is the right answer.

Aesthetics. Traditional aluminum-framed look in chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, and other manufacturer-specified finishes. Reads as a more traditional bathroom style and works in remodels where the design matches.

Durability and glass spec. Framed kits typically use 1/4" tempered safety glass meeting ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Cat. II. The aluminum framing provides perimeter rigidity that the thinner glass benefits from. Code-compliant, simply thinner than the 3/8" or 1/2" used in frameless and semi-frameless.

Fit and customization. Kits are manufactured to nominal opening sizes. Moffat performs custom-fit modifications during shower door kit installation: shimming for out-of-plumb walls, hardware coordination, and in-shop glass cutting if the panel is wider than the opening.

Where framed is the right answer. Remodel scopes where a kit fits the design and budget direction, designer-spec'd kits already selected, manufacturer-direct kits supplied with a remodel, traditional bathrooms where the framed aesthetic is the design intent.

Honest fit notes. Thinner glass than custom frameless or semi-frameless. Aluminum framing and gasket channels add maintenance points: Front Range hard water is harder on framed-channel gaskets than on smooth frameless glass. Moffat's workmanship warranty covers install labor; the kit's glass and hardware are covered by the manufacturer's pass-through.

How to Pick the Right Style For Your Remodel

The right shower door style depends on four decisions: design direction, the structural condition of the opening, the remodel scope and budget tier, and how long the door has to last.

Design direction. Design-forward, modern, or minimalist remodels almost always land on frameless or semi-frameless, with the choice between those two coming down to opening condition. Traditional or kit-supplied remodels often land on framed because the aluminum-framed look matches the rest of the bathroom. Match the style to the room's design intent, not to a tier label.

Opening condition. Out-of-square, out-of-plumb, and unusual-geometry openings benefit from custom fabrication: frameless if jamb conditions support it, semi-frameless if the opening or panel length calls for added structural backing. Standard nominal-size openings can absorb a framed kit with shimming and custom-fit modifications.

Remodel scope and budget tier. Premium remodels with a custom-everywhere scope land on custom frameless or semi-frameless. Kit-supplied or designer-spec'd remodel scopes often land on framed because the kit is part of the broader package. We keep dollar specifics off this page; the shower door cost guide covers relative pricing across the three styles.

Durability and longevity. Custom frameless and semi-frameless built with 3/8" or 1/2" glass and premium hardware are spec'd for 15-plus years of remodel-grade service. Framed kits with 1/4" glass have shorter operational lifespans, particularly in Front Range hard-water conditions where buildup on aluminum gaskets accelerates wear.

The honest verdict. For a premium Northern Colorado bathroom remodel where design intent, structural fit, and longevity all matter, custom frameless or custom semi-frameless is almost always the right answer, and Moffat fabricates and installs both in-shop. For a kit-tier remodel where a framed kit fits the design direction, Moffat installs framed kits from any source. The matchup is the bathroom and the buyer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the actual difference between frameless, semi-frameless, and framed shower doors?

Frameless uses no perimeter framing (custom 3/8" or 1/2" heavy glass held by clamps and hinges); semi-frameless uses a slim framed channel at the jamb and often the floor track with the same 3/8" or 1/2" custom glass; framed uses full aluminum framing around the door and panels with thinner 1/4" kit glass. All three meet ANSI Z97.1 safety code. Moffat fabricates frameless and semi-frameless custom in-shop and installs framed kits from any source. Request a quote to discuss which fits your remodel.

Are frameless shower doors better than framed for a Northern Colorado bathroom remodel?

It depends on the remodel. Frameless is the right answer for design-forward premium remodels with custom openings and a longer expected service life. Framed kits are the right answer for kit-supplied or traditional-design remodels where the aluminum-framed look fits the bathroom. Request a quote to walk it through.

Do frameless shower doors leak more than framed shower doors?

No, not when properly fabricated and installed. Frameless enclosures use precision-templated heavy glass with seal placements engineered to the opening; framed kits rely on perimeter gaskets that wear and accumulate buildup over time. Every Moffat install ends with a water test at the final walkthrough. Schedule an on-site measure to discuss your opening.

Can Moffat install a framed shower door kit if that's what fits my remodel?

Yes. Moffat installs framed kits from any source: home centers, online retailers, designer-spec catalogs, manufacturer-direct. We perform custom-fit modifications for the real opening (shimming, in-shop glass cutting if needed, hardware coordination) per our kit installation service. We install framed kits; we do not fabricate them.

How does Front Range hard water affect framed vs frameless shower doors?

Hard water leaves mineral deposits on both, but aluminum framing and gasket channels accumulate buildup faster than smooth frameless glass and are harder to clean. Squeegee after every shower, weekly non-abrasive cleaning, and an optional factory-applied hydrophobic coating (available on either style) extend the look of either build.
