Northern Colorado homeowners specifying custom shower glass keep running into the same downstream problem. Within months of install, hard-water mineral buildup and soap-scum film start dulling the panels even with regular cleaning, and the design intent of the heavy glass starts disappearing behind a haze. Diamon-Fusion is a factory-applied hydrophobic and oleophobic glass coating that chemically bonds to the surface to repel water, soap scum, and hard-water mineral buildup. Moffat Glass is an authorized applicator, so the coating we ship is treated at our Northern Colorado shop on cut and tempered glass before install, not in the field after the enclosure is set.
The coating is a factory-applied chemical glass treatment, not a wax, not a sealant, not a spray-on you reapply every few months. Once it bonds to the surface, it stays bonded. It is not a film you can peel off, and it is not a temporary surface treatment that wears down on a fixed schedule.
What makes it different from older water-repellent products is that it is both hydrophobic and oleophobic. Hydrophobic means it repels water: water-based residue like hard-water spots and soap scum beads up and rolls off rather than spreading and drying on the panel. Oleophobic means it repels oil: oil-based residue like fingerprints, body oil, hair-product overspray, and lotion smudges fails to bond to the surface the way it would on untreated glass.
In practical terms, the treated panel cleans up faster, holds its visual clarity longer between cleanings, and resists the slow accumulation of film that turns uncoated shower glass into a frosted-looking surface over the first year. Shower enclosures are the primary use case in Northern Colorado, but the same coating works on wine room walls, exterior windows, large mirrors, and glass tabletops.
The coating forms a covalent chemical bond with the silica in the glass surface. It fills the microscopic peaks and valleys where water, soap scum, body oil, and mineral deposits would otherwise lodge and adhere. The result is an ultra-thin, optically clear permanent barrier, measured in nanometers, invisible to the eye, but functionally transforming how the surface behaves.
The dual hydrophobic-and-oleophobic property is what produces the noticeable day-to-day difference. Most water-repellent treatments are hydrophobic only, meaning they push back on water but oils still smudge the surface. The factory coating handles both. Water-based residue (hard-water spots, soap scum, mineral film) and oil-based residue (body oil, lotion, fingerprints) both fail to bond to the treated panel.
"Permanent" in this context means the chemical bond does not wash off with cleaning. The water-repellent performance does degrade over years if the panel is exposed to abrasive cleaners, harsh chemical sprays, or hard scrubbing with scouring pads. With proper care (squeegee after each use, non-abrasive cleaner, no ammonia, no bleach), the protective performance is rated by the manufacturer for the full residential lifetime of the glass. The coating is also optically clear: it does not tint, frost, haze, or alter the appearance of the underlying glass.
Northern Colorado's municipal water runs harder than coastal regions and substantially harder than the soft-water markets in the Pacific Northwest and the southeastern U.S. The water serving Loveland, Fort Collins, Greeley, Evans, and the surrounding Larimer and Weld County footprint carries dissolved calcium and magnesium that leave behind visible mineral scale every time water dries on a glass surface.
Here is what that looks like on a new uncoated heavy-glass shower. Within the first one to three months, mineral spots and soap-scum film start accumulating along the bottom edge and the high-spray zones. By month six to twelve, the buildup is visible from across the bathroom: the panel starts looking "dirty" even immediately after cleaning, because the mineral scale has bonded to the surface and standard cleaners cannot break it down without scrubbing that risks scratching the panel.
In a softer-water market, mineral buildup is a much slower problem and the coating is a nice-to-have. In our market, mineral buildup on uncoated heavy-glass shower panels is a guaranteed problem within the first year. The hard-water defense is not speculative here; it is the answer to a problem every Front Range homeowner with an uncoated heavy-glass shower will eventually face. Premium design boards in Larimer and Weld County increasingly specify the coating at the heavy-glass scope-setting stage for exactly this reason.
Most coating orders we ship are bundled into a parent heavy-glass scope at fabrication time, and shower enclosures lead the list. Coating the panels for custom frameless shower doors is the most common request because that surface feels the hard-water defense most directly on a daily basis. Beyond showers, several other premium-home glass surfaces benefit:
When the coating is bundled into a multi-surface order at fabrication time, every panel is treated under the same controlled conditions in one run. That keeps performance consistent and avoids the seams that come from coating some panels and leaving others untreated.
There are two ways a glass coating can be applied, and the difference matters for the durability you get and the warranty you keep.
Factory-applied means the coating is applied at a shop, on cut and tempered glass panels, under controlled conditions, before install. Field-applied means the coating is applied to glass already installed in the home, on-site, in the finished space.
Factory application produces better durability. The coating cures fully when applied to clean, dry, properly-prepped glass at the correct temperature and humidity, and a controlled shop environment delivers all four conditions. It also allows uniform coverage on every panel; field application has to work around hardware that is already set. Because we factory-apply Diamon-Fusion at our Northern Colorado shop on the cut and tempered glass before install, every panel gets uniform coverage under controlled conditions.
The other reason factory application matters is the warranty. The manufacturer's warranty applies only when the coating is applied by an authorized applicator. DIY application or work by unauthorized installers typically falls outside the warranty.
When comparing coating quotes, four questions cut through the noise:
See the coating's product spec page and our in-house fabrication and tempering workflow.
The single most important care habit is to squeegee the panels after each use. Squeegeeing removes water before mineral scale has time to deposit on the surface. Even with the coating in place, water that is allowed to dry on the panel deposits some mineral residue over time; squeegeeing prevents the deposit before it bonds.
For weekly cleaning, use a mild, non-abrasive glass cleaner formulated for treated surfaces, paired with a microfiber cloth. Manufacturer-approved cleaners are non-abrasive and ammonia-free. What to skip: scouring pads, abrasive sponges, industrial-strength bathroom cleaners, ammonia-heavy products, bleach-based anti-mildew sprays, and DIY vinegar or baking-soda mixtures (the acidity degrades the coating over time). When in doubt, gentler cleaning is better.
We provide the manufacturer's care guide at handoff on every coated heavy-glass project. The guide names the specific approved cleaner products and the cleaning routine that preserves the manufacturer-rated lifetime residential warranty.
What care cannot fix: damage from abrasive cleaners, harsh chemical exposure, contractor modifications after install, freeze-thaw cracking on exterior windows, or hail. With the squeegee-and-mild-cleaner routine, however, the water-repellent performance is rated for the full residential lifetime of the glass.
The coating is a factory-applied hydrophobic and oleophobic glass treatment that chemically bonds to the surface to repel water, soap scum, and hard-water mineral buildup. It forms a covalent bond with the silica, creating an ultra-thin, optically clear permanent barrier. Moffat is an authorized applicator and treats the glass at our Northern Colorado shop.
Factory-applied coatings carry the manufacturer's lifetime residential warranty when installed by an authorized applicator, with a 15-year warranty on commercial applications. Practical performance depends on care: regular squeegeeing and a non-abrasive, non-ammonia cleaner preserve the water-repellent properties for the residential lifetime of the glass. Abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals shorten the practical life of any coating. Ask for the manufacturer's care guide.
For Northern Colorado heavy-glass projects, yes. Front Range hard water causes visible mineral buildup on uncoated panels within months, and the protective treatment dramatically reduces that buildup over the life of the glass. In Larimer and Weld County's hard-water context, the alternative is visible scale and aggressive cleaning that risks scratching the panel.

Yes. The coating works on any clean glass surface, including wine room glass walls, exterior windows, large mirrors, and glass tabletops. Bundling multiple surfaces into a single coating run at fabrication time keeps performance consistent. Talk to us about which surfaces would benefit.
The protective coating is a one-time factory-applied upgrade that pays off across the full life of your heavy-glass shower or wine room, particularly in Northern Colorado's hard-water context. Since 1921, Moffat Glass has built custom heavy-glass enclosures across the Front Range, fabricated and tempered at our shop in Evans and, when specified, treated with the coating before install. As an authorized applicator, we bundle the protective coating directly into the parent heavy-glass scope so every panel ships ready to defend against hard-water staining from day one.
